Viewpoints “Lately”

Viewpoints is a pop punk ensemble from the Albany area, and on Sunday we worked with them on a music video for their new single “Lately”. The shoot took place at the Troy Art Center, in their Joseph L. Bruno theatre, lovingly referred to as the “black box”. Filming in this space allowed us to create an infinite background that, with the help of some haze, perfectly created an abstract scene.

In keeping with the band’s desire for a performance video, we chose to shoot them each in a simple, yet unique lighting setup as they performed. The idea of this kind of video is to really feature the band to their audience, introducing the personality of each individual while, at the same time, establishing their overall vibe as a whole. We achieved that end with specially selected color palettes for each member of the band; filming on our RED Scarlet-W with a mix of handheld, and gimbal work on the DJI Ronin. This gave us a great opportunity to make a visually compelling story with nothing but the musicians and their song.

With Viewpoints, the process was easy. This is a group of genuine people who really care about the music they produce. It was immediately clear that they had a passion for what we were doing and an understanding of our role as filmmakers in the process of delivering their vision. That kind of energy made it a pleasure to be on set.
