Broadcast Production for Albany Pro Musica
 – Chromoscope Pictures

As a full service video production company, we can handle a lot. Everything ranging from branded content, corporate video, and even commercial production for broadcast. Producing not one, but two hour long programs for broadcast on WMHT was right up our alley.

 – Atwood Magazine

Over the past decade, New Jersey alt-folk band Pinegrove has cultivated a community of fans, lovingly called Pinenuts, who not only listen but actively participate in the band’s music. When Pinegrove published the lyrics and guitar tabs to Marigold ahead of the album’s release, thousands of fans interpreted and recorded their own versions of the songs before hearing the band’s renditions.

Video Production & Social Distancing
– Chromoscope Pictures

Hello ChromoFriends™, welcome to Spring. We’ve been quiet for a little while now, hunkered down editing our short film, and wondering just what the hell we’re going to do in this new social distancing reality we find ourselves in.

Half Waif Does What She Must in Evocative Video for Her New Single "Halogen 2"
– Paste Magazine

Half Waif, aka Hudson Valley-based singer, songwriter and producer Nandi Rose, will release her ANTI- Records debut The Caretaker on March 27, and Tuesday she shares the video for isolation anthem “Halogen 2,” her forthcoming album’s second single. “‘Halogen 2’ is a song about isolation and the search for strength. The halogens are some of the most reactive elements on the periodic table, and in this song, winter and a life alone in the country are like halogen: an unrelenting force that produces change,” Rose explains in a statement.

Malala Yousafzai Inspires Seth Glier’s New Song 'If It Wasn’t For You'—and Us!
– Parade

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Seth Glier was inspired by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai when he wrote his new single, “If It Wasn’t For You.” The video for this strong, Bee Gee’s-style song features roller derby warriors that echo the song’s energy and determination. The song solidifies Glier’s own concepts about the transformative power of turning one’s trauma into gratitude and awareness. He’s set to embark on a U.S. State Department-sponsored international tour as a music ambassador.

Pencildive looking ahead after eventful 2019
– Timesunion

“Maybe we should talk about last year? It was a pretty big one,” he said. “In June we released our EP,” said Gina De Nardo, the band’s lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter. “During the same month we shot our video for ‘Cricket Man.'” The video was released in September after a series of shows to promote pencildive’s “When I Go Outside” EP. Filmed by local production company Chromoscope, “Cricket Man” is based on a dream De Nardo’s niece Adriana had. De Nardo used the surrealistic imagery as inspiration, turning it into a ripping post-punk audiovisual nightmare.

Candy Ambulance: managing trauma and taking up space in “Traumantic”
Aug 27, 2019 – The Collaborative

Candy Ambulance, the wiry rock trio comprised of Barker, Jesse Bolduc and Jon Cantiello, were recording their first full-length album Traumantic with Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns ‘N’ Roses). Their latest work has collectively become their proudest, not only because they feel they’re at their tightest musically, but because it taps into their emotions. This is their most raw and vulnerable work to date.

Chromoscope Pictures Thrives On Collaboration
Jun 20, 2019 – The Collaborative

The trio behind the Troy-based independent film company Chromoscope Pictures are responsible for many of the Capital Region music scene’s most well-produced and attention-grabbing music videos. Childhood friends Zach Durocher, Nick Spadaro and Jamie Spaulding began their creative journey as teenagers, filming projects on a Sony handycam back in 2006. (“They were zombie movies and they were the worst,” Spadaro says.) Picking up technique, gear and ever climbing standards for high-quality production, they’ve gone on to produce visuals for local artists with major draw such as Wild Adriatic, Sawyer Fredericks, Sean Rowe and Girl Blue.

PRØHBTD Premiere: Jocelyn & Chris Arndt’s “Kill in the Cure”
– PROHBTD

The “Kill in the Cure” video begins with Jocelyn curled up in a ball on an oversized chair, appearing both vulnerable and defiant. As her brother Chris lays down a stomping blues riff, Jocelyn exudes torn emotions as she admits, “Into the red, outta the blue, I was blinded by the lens I should be seeing you through.” Chris’ riff continues to build as Jocelyn, showcasing an impressive vocal range, arrives at a fatalistic chorus brimming with anger and passion.

Another year gone my friends. Therefore it is time, once again, for us Chromies to shout out some of the music videos we took a fancy to these past 365 days.

An ode to the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera
– Chromoscope Pictures

Over the years we’ve owned lots of cameras, spanning numerous generations of technology over the past decade. We started on a Sony Handycam in 2006, then a Canon Vixia in 2008, then a Canon 7D in 2010, countless other DSLRs, and eventually coming to own a RED Scarlet-W in 2017. But in between owning the DSLRs and the RED, sits the venerable, and sometimes controversial, Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera (BMCC).

Northern Faces Explore Moments of Doubt Via "Firecracker" (premiere)
– PopMatters

Northern Faces will issue the album Fingers Crossed on August 24 via Equal Vision Records. The band’s new single/video “Firecracker” accentuates the trio’s penchant for groove-oriented songs. This piece often recalls the Black Keys in moments of expansive, echo-y ecstasy while losing none of the band‘s individual identity along the way. The tune, which tackles the issue of fading passions, arrives just in time for the fading days of summer, when the ambitions and longings of those long, hot days begin to die down and the realities of the world set in.

Video premiere: 'Voice' winner Sawyer Fredericks burns bright in indie clip 'Gasoline'
 – Yahoo Entertainment

Three years ago, singer-songwriter Sawyer Fredericks won Season 8 of The Voice and — though he was only 16 at the time — embarked on one of the most mature and credible careers of any Voice contestant (starting with his coronation song, which was written by his hero Ray LaMontagne). Earlier this year, Fredericks released his independent, self-penned and self-produced “free-range folk” album, Hide Your Ghost.

Girl Blue: "Six Moons"
– Chromoscope Pictures

Last week we caught up with Girl Blue, one of the Capitol Region’s ever present talents, to record a video for her song “Six Moons”. Miss Blue and her song fit right in at our chosen setting, The Church, a new venue and event space nestled in the hills of Troy beside the RPI campus. On set we were joined by Jimi Woodul and Dan Dekalb of Dark Honey and their independent label Just Pretend Records; the entity responsible for the production of the song. Also on set was our friend Kiki Vassilakis, lending her light bending talents to shoot these behind the scenes photos.

Viewpoints "Lately"
– Chromoscope Pictures

Viewpoints is a pop punk ensemble from the Albany area, and on Sunday we worked with them on a music video for their new single “Lately”. The shoot took place at the Troy Art Center, in their Joseph L. Bruno theatre, lovingly referred to as the “black box”. Filming in this space allowed us to create an infinite background that, with the help of some haze, perfectly created an abstract scene. In keeping with the band’s desire for a performance video, we chose to shoot them each in a simple, yet unique lighting setup as they performed.

Featturette: Beth Slade
– Chromoscope Pictures

Yesterday we met up with Beth Slade to collaborate on a model featurette. Beth is a model with extensive experience in Bridal, Glamour, Lifestyle, and Commercial work. We first met Beth while shooting at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s annual ballet gala last year. Sometime afterward we cast her in the music video for Dark Honey’s “Stinging Nettle”. So, naturally, when we began talking about shooting some small featurette style videos; Beth was the first person to come to mind.

Art & Entrepreneurship
– Chromoscope Pictures

It seems, more and more, that we will be the generation of entrepreneurs. Sure, the entrepreneurial spirit is one which has been engrained in our culture since the beginning, but there is something different these days. The answer is obvious; the internet. To have the world at our fingertips is an advantage that has never existed before, and it has permeated every aspect of business. So how does it translate into the world of art and artistic entrepreneurship? It isn’t a surprise that most of the hustlers in our community have already figured out how; through Crowd Sourcing, Social Media Engagement, and Networking.

Shared Creativity
– Chromoscope Pictures

“Nobody gets anywhere by themselves”, or so the mantra goes. This is true not only in the film industry, but in any business or collaboration. While some may take all the credit, achieving a shared vision is easier than it sounds. The method of working that we take pride in, is to achieve a common view with the artists and brands we work with. After all, an actual chromoscope combines multiple wavelengths of light into a single image, so as our namesake dictates, that’s our thing.

Community
– Chromoscope Pictures

This past year or so has taught us at Chromoscope quite a bit; how to run a business, how different creative industries work, and what it means to be an artist and a business owner. It also taught us a lot about something we thought we knew pretty well, and that’s community. Coming from a filmmaking background, community is built into the machine. In order to make something of value, it really does take a village as the old adage goes. Aside form the director, the cinematographer, editor, and actors; you need grip, gaffers, production assistants, set designers, production managers.

Love Burns RED
– Chromoscope Pictures

In honor of Valentines Day, we thought it the perfect occasion for a post about the thing most dear to our hearts; Our RED Scarlet-W. We acquired this beauty in April of 2017, which amounted to signing away each of our first born children, but we can say with confidence that it was well worth the sacrifice. The Scarlet is a full-fledged Super 35 cinema camera, shooting in glorious 16-bit Redcode RAW, 5K resolution at 60fps, 4K at 120fps, and even as high as 300fps at 2K – which affords us really kick-ass slow motion. And with enough dynamic range to best the ARRI Alexa, you get a sense of how serious this machine is. Alright, you get it – we’ll stop now.

"It doesn't have to be good, it just has to exist."
– Chromoscope Pictures

What a title for a blog post, huh? If it didn’t immediately strike you as concerning, coming from a group of people who call themselves professionals, it really should have. Why? You ask. Well, I’ll tell ya… Because it’s a really stupid fucking idea. (This will be a bit of a rant) Some time ago, when Chromoscope was just starting to rack up some clients and projects, the three of us found ourselves attending a meeting of filmmakers, actors, producers, etc. working in and around the greater area.  The experience at this particular gathering is one which we were used to, and we even saw some faces we had encountered and worked with in the past.

The 2017 Chromie Awards
– Chromoscope Pictures

2017 was an incredible year for art, especially in film and music. We’ve decided to to make a short list of the music videos that had influenced our style and inspired us as they were released in 2017. You may see elements of these videos in the work we’ve produced ourselves over the past year.

Watch Girl Blue's haunting cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams'

Born and raised in New York and Dallas on classical piano, choir music, hip hop and Ani Difranco, she developed a diverse sense for vocal arranging and storytelling through song. Her debut EP I Am Not A Star was embraced by Spotify right from its release, and her first single ‘Fire Under Water’ received over 2 millions plays.

Northern Faces share "Messin' With Me" [Video Premiere]
– Earmilk

2017 may be the poster year for getting messed with, but Albany-based alternative rock trio, Northern Faces are leaning against the wrongdoers,  dropping false illusions, and driving straight into a less messed with reality, in the video for their song “Messin’ With Me’ premiering here today on EARMILK. Produced and directed by Chromoscope Pictures, the latest visual from the band, finds the three members cruising the highways of upstate New York, or so it seems at first.

MWA Video Premiere: “People Are Deceitful” by Candy Ambulance
– Midwest Action

America’s sweetest emergency services vehicle has hit the road yet again with a whole new tour and a sassy new video. Don’t let the name fool you, New York’s Candy Ambulance might seem cute at first glance but they have an edge to them. Their new video is a hedonistic little romp that finds our heroes clad in black whispering sweet nothings into the ears of innocent dinner party patrons. Their subtle influence leads the party to throw caution to the wind and let loose all of their inhibitions. Chaos ensues.

Premiere: Wild Adriatic’s Music Video for ‘Come Back Baby’
– NYS Music

For this video we had the idea of involving the local community a bit more and put out a call for local young theater students to cast in this video. We ended up working with kids from Ballston Spa and had such a great time shooting with them. They were, of course, way more professional than we were on set and committed a whole weekend of their lives to making a fun video with us. Everything related to the video stems from our home community. Our friend Josh Casano is a band director at Oneida Middle School and connected us with the school principal who agreed to let us shoot there.

First Watch: Sean Rowe's Oaken Baritone Bolsters The Hopeful 'Gas Station Rose'
– NPR Music

Sean Rowe’s voice, a room-rattling baritone, demands attention. The stories he tells with it are portraits that feel simple on the surface… they never are. Within “Gas Station Rose,” Sean Rowe is on the road with a partner, they have each other, not much else. Despite the pair’s obstacles, there’s an optimism here. “The line ‘we are the elders of our minds,'” Rowe says, “means that we control our own destiny, that it’s what we believe about ourselves that determines where we go.”

Sean Rowe Releases Video For "To Leave Something Behind"
 ANTI

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Sean Rowe has released a dramatic new video for his song “To Leave Something Behind.” The track has recently found a renewed life and wider audience after being featured in the Ben Alleck film ‘The Accountant.’ In the new video, a solitary Rowe performs “To Leave Something Behind” in an empty church as imagery from the film flickers across the walls. Originally released as a 7 inch single in 2013, the evocative Dylanesque track delivers a powerful coda to the film’s emotional conclusion.

Wild Adriatic, “Appleton”
– Impose

New York’s rock & soul power collective Wild Adriatic – comprised of Travis Gray (vocals, guitar), Rich Derbyshire (bass), and Mateo Vosganian (drums) – has been our touring, hitting the festival circuit hard this past summer. And it doesn’t look like things are slowing down, as their winter dates are many and it looks as though they are set to start 2017 with a bang. Between all the madness, however, they have managed to get us the exclusive premiere of their lyric video for “Appleton”.

Video Premiere: Wild Adriatic “The Ocean” (Led Zeppelin Cover)
– Relix

Upstate New York rockers Wild Adriatic have released their very first live album Live, Volume One: No Way, Let’s Do It available for pre-order on their website. The album includes a slew of originals as well as a cover below of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean,” which we are proud to premiere the live video for today.  On the tune, the band told Relix, “We’ve always been huge Zeppelin fans.

Baeble First Play: The Americana Uplift Of Wild Adriatic
 – Baeble Music

We’ve got the exclusive premiere of the video for “Cooperstown,” the latest music video from NY Americana rockers, Wild Adriatic. With the soaring, anthemic vocals and hooks of Cold War Kids, the emotional intimacy of soul rock acts like City & Colour, and a healthy dose of the best of 70s Americana rock ala the Boss, Wild Adriatic hit the sweet spot of thumping, uplifting Americana. And the video for “Cooperstown” captures that rolling energy as the band travels through New York, interacting with nature, fans, and the lonesome open road.
